In 2022, we celebrate Father's Day (also known as Men's Day) in Germany on May 26, which always falls on the public holiday of Ascension Day, a Thursday, and thus takes place 40 days after Easter Sunday.
On Father's Day, men get to celebrate themselves, and we understand that all too well – because we do it too. After all, our dads are the first men in our lives who protect us from the world, give us security, inspire us to new adventures, and fulfill every wish.
Fathers are the best storytellers, drivers, trip planners, lifesavers, sports coaches, DIY geniuses, walking encyclopedias, and our absolute role models. For all this and so much more, we love and celebrate our fathers and want to show this especially on Father's Day.
Where does the Father's Day tradition come from?
The roots of the modern Father's Day can be found in the USA, where this day of honor for fathers was introduced in 1909. Inspired by the first Mother's Day celebrated in the USA in 1907, the idea for a Father's Day came from Sonora Smart Dodd. She wanted to thank her father, who, as a widower, raised six children alone. She sought support from the church, local businesses, and government officials and succeeded: On June 19, 1910, a small American town celebrated Father's Day for the first time. It became an official holiday in the USA in 1972 and is now celebrated every year on the third Sunday in June.
In Germany, the current form of Father's Day celebrations emerged at the end of the 19th century in Berlin and its surroundings, likely introduced by breweries for economic reasons. Here, the tradition also arose that Father's Day is "a men-only affair" and is celebrated with a men's outing. This was probably also the case in Christian rites, where male groups celebrated and gathered on Ascension Day.
Since 1934, Ascension Day has been a public holiday.
Worldwide, there are many different dates to celebrate Father's Day, but the international wish is the same: We want to honor fathers on this day and bring them great joy with special gifts, experiences, and attentions. In recent years, the trend for Father's Day celebrations has shifted towards a family event, with the focus on parenting. Often, outings, bike rides, hikes, or a cozy barbecue with the family are planned. This way, the whole family can enjoy the beautiful Father's Day tradition and celebrate dad together.
